There seems to be a correlation between volume lash extensions and dare I say it, “caterpillar” lashes. Before we dive deep into this, let me just say, we get it! We don’t like caterpillar lashes either. So let me, a lash educator, tell you a little bit about this versatile technique and why we love it.
What are Volume lashes?
Volume is the technique of applying two or more extensions per natural eyelash. This allows a trained lash artist to custom create almost any look desired by the client. Because of its versatility, the client can request anything from a subtle enhancement to a more dramatic look. Similarly, volume has the power to remedy common lash complaints such as the natural lashes pointing down, too thin or too short. No matter which set our clients choose, they always walk away with a defined lash line and a light eyeshadow effect created by the wispy lashes.
Styling and Client Feedback
At Muse + Maven, we start off with a thorough consultation to get a good idea of the client’s desired look. We’ll even get the client to show me photos if they have one handy. Based on the information presented, assessment of the client’s natural lashes, and most importantly, their overall facial features we formulate a style. Styling and damage-free lashing involves a deep understanding of proportions, angles, and advanced lashing techniques that come with education and experience.
Let’s address the caterpillar
Unfortunately, there are way too many photos out there of “volume” lashes that look exaggerated whether it’s: 1) too thick, 2) too messy, and 3) too long. The reason this looks stands out in a negative way is because the face lacks balance resulting in an extreme look that is unflattering.
What to expect from Muse + Maven
As mentioned, we do a thorough consultation and involve our clients in designing their look. In terms of styling, we follow guidelines that consider the clients’ hair color, brows, eye shape, and lifestyle. The length, curl and density are determined by the facial proportions so that we end up with a style that enhances the eyes without throwing off the symmetry of the face.

What are my options?
Amanda and I (Tracy) are highly skilled lash artists with years of experience. So, the options are endless, except for caterpillar. We can custom create anything from a light set such as 2D or Hybrid, to something more dramatic like Russian Volume or Mega Volume.
2D Volume: 2D is the application of 2 extensions for each natural lash. This set creates a natural but enhanced look. We recommend this option for someone who has above average lash density.
Hybrid: Hybrid is the application of 50% Classic + 50% Volume. This look is great for someone looking for texture and moderate volume. Like 2D, we recommend this option for someone who has above average lash density.
Russian Volume: Russian Volume is the application of 3-5 extremely thin lash extensions per natural lash. It can transform the eyes whether you’re looking to elongate and lift by choosing a cat-eye style, or a doll-eye to open up the eyes. Other corrective uses for this technique is to disguise hooded eyes or to create fullness for those who have below average natural lash density. Russian Volume is great for anybody!
Mega Volume: Mega Volume is the same technique as Russian Volume. The major difference is the use of more lashes per natural lash and the use of layering techniques. This creates depth and a darker and denser look. This option is not for everybody, but it also has some corrective purposes. Mega is great for someone with extremely low lash density or someone who has very thin lashes wanting a dramatic look.
